Jim Bennett is Alabama’s 52nd Sec retary of State after being appointed by Governor Robert Bentley to the post on July 31, 2013. He previously served as Secretary of State from 1993 to 2003. During that time, he also served as the first president of the National Association of Secretaries of State from Alabama during the 1999-2000 term. He also chaired the NASS Elections Committee from 1995-1998.

Before his first tenure as Secretary of State, Bennett served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1979 to 1983 and in the Alabama Senate from 1983 to 1993. While there, he championed the cause of public disclosure of campaign finances as one of the principal authors of the Fair Campaign Practices Act.

Bennett’s most recent post was as Commissioner of the Department of Labor under both Governors Riley and Bentley.

Before entering public service, Bennett worked in various private sector positions, including as a reporter for the Birmingham Post-Herald. In 1969, he was chosen for a national award by the American Political Science Association for his public affairs reporting.

Secretary Bennett received a Bachelor of Science from Jacksonville State University where he currently serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees for the university. He also holds a Master of Arts from the University of Alabama. He serves on many boards and commissions and is the author of several books, many of which focus on the Birmingham iron and steel industry. He is married to the former Andrea Roberts of Daphne; he has two grown children and three grandchildren.
